Las mujeres de mi general
d. Ismael Rodriguez
c. Mexico
y. 1951
description:
"South-of-the-border screen idol Pedro Infante, Sr. headlines the period drama Las Mujeres De Mi General, set during the Mexican Revolution of the 1910s and '20s. Infante stars as a rebel general caught up in a tempestuous romantic tug-of-war between two women: his ex-girlfriend (Chula Prieto) and his wife (Lilia Prado). This love triangle yields devastating consequences for the wife, including imprisonment and estrangement from her child; when she is finally reunited with the baby and the general, all concerned (including the mistress) must face an onslaught of terror from bellicose governmental soldiers." This is Pancho Villa
d. Ismael Rodriguez
c. Mexico
y. 1957
description:
"One of several biographical films that dramatize the life of Mexican hero and revolutionary Pancho Villa, this version by director Ismael Rodriguez is a standard recounting of the Mexican peasant's exploits from a favorable light. Villa (Pedro Armendariz) was born in 1878 to sharecroppers on a ranch in northern Mexico. When he was sixteen, he had to escape the ranch for his life because he shot the owner, Sr. Lopez-Negrete in the foot for an act of aggression against his family. After several captures and escapes, Villa (who by then had changed his name from Doroteo Arango) eventually heads into the life of an outlaw. Even when he attempts to go straight, he is caught out by the lawmen looking for him and heads back into the mountains. By 1909, he had joined the Mexican Revolutionary forces and was in charge of the Division of the North. Rising high in position for a short while, his life was always threatened. He was assassinated in 1923." (AMG)

My Son, the Hero
d. Ismael Rodriguez
c. Mexico
y. 1961
description:
"This effective drama about vengeance and its results is loosely based on practices in the Mexican boondocks where the law can be ignored when it comes to seeking revenge. The tale concerns two brothers who decide to avenge their father's death, as would be expected. But this ill-considered decision leads to a set of problems that continue to spiral downward until both brothers are in way above their heads. The difficulty with vengeance, they discover, is that it never ends. Popular cinematic stars Julio Aleman and Antonio Aguilar star, along with the well-known Emilio "El Indio" Fernández." (AMG)

Animas Trujano
d. Ismael Rodriguez
c. Mexico
y. 1962
description:
"This award-winning drama by noted director Ismael Rodríguez revolves around a festival of mayordomía in the provinces, or something on the idea of "king for a day." In the annual celebration, the church elects one man as "chief," an honor that is gained by buying it, in effect. Whoever donates the most, gets the coveted title. Celebrated Japanese star Toshiro Mifune plays the lead character, Animas Trujano, a rough peasant who abuses his children and does nothing while his wife supports the family. Animas would like to be "chief" in the annual festival and begins to do everything he can to get the needed money. Meanwhile, Animas' wife is headed for some serious trouble in connection with a local woman of dubious morals that Animas has been seeing." (AMG)
