Los motivos de Berta

d. Jose Luis Guerin
c. Spain
y. 1985

description:
"Berta is a young teen experiencing all the changes that occur when childhood is left behind and life as an adult woman begins to dawn. This first film by novice director Jose Luis Guerin is excellently structured around action and events, gestures and facial expressions, that subtly reveal the differences in Berta's expanding life. In black and white with a soundtrack that enhances the simple story, the movie is minimalist, but effective." (AMG)

Innisfree

d. Jose Luis Guerin
c. Spain
y. 1990

description:
"This documentary focuses on the modern-day village of Innisfree, the location used by legendary director John Ford for his Irish romance The Quiet Man starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. Featuring some excerpts from the movie, and an amusing moment in which some schoolchildren describe the plot of that film, most of the documentary simply shows images of the village without any narration or commentary." Tren de sombras

d. Jose Luis Guerin
c. Spain
y. 1997

description:
"Director José Luís Guerin uses several types of film media and distinctive lighting techniques to explore the mystery of Paris lawyer and amateur filmmaker Gerard Fleury who on November 8, 1930 disappeared on a lake near the village of Le Thuit in Normandy while looking for proper lighting conditions around the lake shore. A challenging and arty drama, much of the story centers around the events leading up to the disappearance and is based on some recently discovered, but poorly preserved home movie footage that was shot just before Fleury vanished (though it looks convincing, the footage is totally bogus). Interwoven around these home movies are shots done in new black-and-white film of the same locale and color sequences depicting the people around Fleury." (AMG)

description:
"A youthful foreigner sits sketching the diners of an outdoor café in hopes of finding the women he met there years before in director José Luis Guerin's languid, sun-soaked tale of longing. It was a long time ago that the artist met a mysterious beauty named Sylvia, and the memory of the girl has lingered in his mind ever since. Perhaps if he can capture the movements of the patrons in this quaint European café he can recognize the woman he seeks. Then at one, the artist believes he has found Sylvia. Setting out into the streets in pursuit of a fading memory, he vows that this time he won't let love slip through his fingers." (AMG)
