Where Are The Dreams of Youth?

"Startlingly raw and deeply unresolved, this is perhaps Ozu's most disturbing exploration of social inequality and the damage it unleashes even among the most loyal friends." (IMDB Comment)

Tokyo Chorus

d. Yasujiro Ozu
c. Japan
y. 1931

description:
"Tokyo Chorus is a dark comedy about unemployment and family in prewar Japan. The film opens with a group of young men at their school graduation. After saying goodbye to their teacher, they are off into the working world. The story follows a single man and his difficulties at his job. He cannot avoid annoying his boss, a tempestuous man, and he's summarily fired. The remainder of the movie concerns his descent into unemployment and the pressure it puts on his family. In a wonderful scene, his wife discovers that he's sold her kimonos to buy food. She approaches him crying while he's playing with their children and the children draw her into their game which dries her tears. After a series of adventures, he finds another job and calm is restored to the family and their lives. Tokyo Chorus is famous for being the first film where Ozu consistently utilized a low-angle camera." (AMG)

The Lady and the Beard

d. Yasujiro Ozu
c. Japan
y. 1931

description:
"This eccentric comedy of manners follows a love quadrangle centered on a kendo master (Tokihiko Okada), whose chauvinistic upholding of Japanese culture screeches to a halt when he falls for a progressive (but not too progressive) office worker. He shaves his beard (after protesting memorably that "all great men have beards!" including Lincoln, Darwin and Marx), puts on a suit and learns the Western ways of wooing a woman, attracting a haughty aristocrat and a gangster floozy in the process. The three very different women seem to be presented as three feminine responses to the Western modernization of Japan, with the office girl being the ideal (conversant in Western ways while wrapped fetchingly in a kimono). Ozu's often hilarious depictions of Okada's romantic entanglements owe a good deal to Lubitsch, but his sensitivity to cultural disparity is uniquely his." (IMDB Comment)

My Wife That Night

d. Yasujiro Ozu
c. Japan

description:
An Ozu feature done in an odd German Expressionist style. It's about gangsters and cops. Reminded me quite a bit of Fritz Lang's M, which hadn't been made yet.

I Graduated, But...

d. Yasujiro Ozu
c. Japan
y. 1929

description:
"A college graduate is unable to find a job but tries to hide his unemployment from his wife and fiancee. Though only 11 minutes of fragments is all that remains of Ozu's initial entry in the "I Verbed, But..." series, it still plays rather coherently." (IMDB Comment)
