Yoshiwara

d. Max Ophuls
c. France
y. 1937

description:
"This bit of elegant esoterica was Max Ophuls' only directorial effort for 1937. Japanese matinee idol Sessue Hayakawa made a long-overdue return to films as Yaamo, a humble Chinese coolie in love with the beautiful and aristocratic Kohana (Michiko Tanaka). Following her father's suicide, Kohana is reduced to working as a Geisha girl, and it is in this capacity that she meets Russian naval officer Serge Polinoff (Pierre-Richard Willm), who marries the girl and takes her back to his homeland. Now regarding Kohana as a traitor, Yaamo swears vengeance on both the girl and her Russian husband. At film's end, only Kohana is left alive, which in context is surprising indeed. The Japanese government issued a formal complaint about the content of Yoshiwara, but French moviegoers were not yet conditioned to take such things seriously, and the film was a hit." (AMG)

Carrot Top

d. Julien Duvivier
c. France
y. 1925

description:
"A family is a group of people living under the same roof who cannot stand each other." So writes young François Lepic, nicknamed Poil de carotte (Carrot-top), in his school essay - and he gets soundly rapped on the knuckles by his teacher for it. But the poor boy is used to such abuse: at home his mother takes a vicious delight in maltreating him, his brother and sister torment him, and his father simply ignores him. Only the maid understands him and foresees the possible tragedy lying ahead." (Cine-Clasico)

Emergency Kisses

d. Philippe Garrel
c. France
y. 1989

description:
"The kicker in this black and white film about the director of the film making a film about his life (got that?) is that almost everyone playing a family member of the director (who plays himself, naturally) really is a family member. In the story, director Phillippe Garrel is preparing to make a film about his life. When he informs his wife that her part is to be played by someone else she is understandably offended - after all, she is an actress, isn't she? This leads to all sorts of family arguments and discussions about what their relationship means to each of them. The couple's children, meanwhile, attempt to get on with their own lives in the best way possible, despite the insufferable silliness of their parents." (AMG)

Les bleu des origines

d. Philippe Garrel
c. France
y. 1979

description:
"Les Bleu des Origins is an uncompromising example of old school avant-garde cinema at its most cryptic, enigmatic and inscrutable. Made by Philippe Garrel in 1979 using a hand-cranked silent camera, Les Bleu represents absolute year zero in film-making, a return to the starkest basics of film's origins in early silent cinema, replacing any trace of narrative or even dialogue with an emphasis almost exclusively on close-ups of women's faces. The film is black and white, and absolutely silent for its full 50-minute duration. " (IMDB Comment)

Berceau de cristal

d. Philippe Garrel
c. France
y. 1976

description:
"A weird and dreamy minimalist underground art movie, Le Berceau de Cristal offers no joy whatsoever to mainstream film buffs - but doomed romantics, drug takers and fans of director Philippe Garrel may find it hypnotic and profoundly moving. An androgynous poet/dreamer (played by Nico - Velvet Underground singer, Eurotrash icon and Garrel's other half) sits and writes and meditates on the aching void that is her life. Hieratic and semi-mythical beings show up to haunt her dreams. Dominique Sanda as a fleshy Pre-Raphaelite earth goddess. Anita Pallenberg as an impishly grinning, emaciated drug diva - shooting up live on camera. An early icon of 'heroin chic.' Not one of these figures utters a word to disturb Nico's reverie. Beyond the poet's voice is only silence and an intermittent, achingly lovely music score. (Uncredited, but perhaps the work of Garrel's frequent collaborator, the Velvet Underground guitarist John Cale.) Impossible to say what any of this is about, only that - in the last few seconds - Nico takes out a revolver and blows a hole in her skull. By that time, you may be so bored that you have an overwhelming desire to do the same, or you may be - as I was - curled up in a primal ball, gazing raptly at the screen and silently sobbing. So if you are a morbid manic-depressive neo-romantic, Le Berceau de Cristal is the film for you. If you value your sanity, stay well clear." (IMDB Comment)

Every Night

d. Eugene Green
c. France
y. 2001

description:
"Eugene Green, an expatriate American living in France, made his debut as a director and screenwriter with this film, based on a story by Gustave Flaubert. In 1967, Henri (Alexis Loret and Jules (Adrien Michaux) are close friends who have grown up together in a small town in the French countryside. But as they turn 17, they begin to follow different paths in life; Henri moves to Paris to go to college, while Jules stays behind to concentrate on a career as a writer. Henri becomes involved with Emilie (Christelle Prot), the wife of one of his professors, and in time they decide to run away together to the United States, leaving Paris just in time to miss the May 1968 student uprisings. Henri maintains a steady correspondence with Jules, and when Henri and Emilie go their separate ways, she stays in touch with Jules, and they become close confidantes through the mail without ever meeting face to face. Toutes Les Nuits became a surprising critical and modest commercial success after being released independently in France, with early screenings advertised only through invitation postcards." (AMG)

Jane B. par Agnes V.

d. Agnes Varda
c. France
y. 1988

description:
"Jane B. is London-born actress and recording star Jane Birkin. Agnes V. is Belgian filmmaker and "grandmother of the New Wave" Agnes Varda. Jane B. Par Agnes V is a cinematic recounting of Birkin's career, from her breakthrough appearance as one of the nude models in Blow-Up to her pinnacle as star of such films as La Femme de Ma Vie (1986). It is also the story of Birkin and Varda's close relationship, made stronger by their mutual admiration and their lifelong fascination with feminist themes. Viewers who prefer straightforward, objective documentaries rather than radicalized film techniques, may not appreciate Jane B. par Agnes V." (AMG)
